Have you ever walked into a pub or restaurant and instantly felt welcome, with an atmosphere warm and friendly and the smell of food making your mouth water before you’ve even sat down? That’s exactly how it felt when we paid a visit to The Legstraps in the village of Wootton on the outskirts of Bedford.
After pre dinner drinks in the cosy informal bar area, we headed to our table in the chic, subtle and stylish restaurant. The menu was full of tempting dishes created with fresh seasonal ingredients all set to entice us. Finally our choices were made with starters being Duck Croquettes, cucumber, spring onion and hoisin dip – served on a slate board in a small cast iron pan, the presentation was flawless as was the taste – with the duck tender and the flavour of the other ingredients all coaxing each other. The other choice was Crispy Pork Cheeks with apple textures, the apple textures had a unique taste remincent of toffee apples, when combined with the tender pork cheeks, the texture and taste from both ingredients was delightful.
Main courses were Chicken Caesar salad, baby gem lettuce, crispy hens egg, anchovies and croutons; the delicately flavoured chicken was complimented with its entourage of fresh ingredients, proving a real delight on the palette.
Smoked Haddock and Loch Duart Salmon and Dill fishcakes with skinny fries and a house salad, the fishcakes were full of fish that was utterly flavoursome.
Here we are again….Dessert time and I can’t possibly fit one in can I? Well purely in the interest of research I can’t do a restaurant review without a dessert – I opted for strawberry cheesecake with rhubarb and ginger compote this was light and creamy with a fresh sweet strawberry taste that was exquisite – Hubby’s dessert was stout and date sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream, it certainly didn’t disappoint and the stout added to a traditional dessert proved a real hit.
All of the dishes were presented beautifully, the food was fabulous, service superb and the wonderful ambience made our whole dining experience a real treat. Make sure you pop along to sample some the menu for yourselves, you won’t be disappointed>
