Summer 2021 sees a new opening in Soho in the form of the exciting members’ cocktail bar, Martinez. Specialising in reuniting forgotten vintage cocktails with much loved classics, Martinez will be opening its doors to members from the diverse, colourful, and maverick of Soho and beyond, reflecting the area’s past and present.
The team is headed by Maurice Marshall, (Sketch, Cuckoo Club, Maddox Club, Scorpios-Mykonos) who, having produced and hosted all kinds of unforgettable nights and events, is known as one of London’s most memorable and popular nightlife figures. Head Bartender, Max Greco has crafted cocktails globally, working at ‘Eau De Vie’ in Sydney before opening his own bar Vasco and winning several prestigious cocktail awards.
The venue’s drinks offering is overseen by the acclaimed and much respected Dré Masso, coupled with the consultancy of highly respected specialists, ‘The Cocktail Lovers’, Gary Sharpen &Sandrae Lawrence. With an award-winning magazine and huge social media following, The Cocktail Lovers are regarded as an authority on cocktails, both in the UK and internationally.
The bar’s eponymous cocktail is hailed as the original precursor to the Martini, and will be served in both its original form, and two evolved variations. In addition to the Martinez, other signature stars of the menu include the Charlie Chapman, Toreador and Hotel Nacional.
The bartenders and waiting staff are well-versed in every cocktail and style and enjoy providing a greatly personalised service. Each member will receive a one-on-one drinks orientation with the bar team upon joining. In these sessions members can discuss penchants and preferences with the bar team, ensuring an effortless but precise experience every visit.
Bar snacks are a thing of beauty at Martinez. A concise offering of snacks and small plates from esteemed, Michelin-starred Chef Hervé Deville is perfectly paired with the cocktail selection. Highlights include Lobster Thermidor Petit Choux, Truffle Croque and Serrano Bruschetta on homemade Foccacia.
Sitting on the first floor, Martinez is an airy, loft-style space. Sleek, bottle-green tiled uprights frame the bar and generous wall space is adorned with custom works by Madrid-based fine artist TomásBalentza, who has exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery. A central-located bar is the major focal point of the room. In deference to the timeless, old-school glamour of Greek Street, the room has been designed and furnished with mid-century and Art Deco-style elements throughout.
Two fireplaces provide focal points, while tall and wide windows, spanning one end of the room, look out onto Soho, drawing in wonderful ambient daytime lighting. The room has three individual, yet correlated areas. ‘The Lounge’ area has comfortable low seating, tables, and lighting, lending it a sense of intimacy,
and ‘By The Bar’ has dining height tables and seating directly opposite the bar and barstools, while ‘By The DJ’ with DJ booth, tall tables, high stools, and raised banquette. The music canopy, which is played at different levels in each area, will be as varied and encompassing as the membership.
Priced at £300 for a year, membership offering is selective yet inclusive. Diversity is encouraged, which will create a community representing all walks, backgrounds, and dispositions. United in their love of cocktails, good company, fabulous music, and great stories. Open from 5pm-1am, Tuesday to Saturday, Martinez will be a place where one can always find a welcoming face. An interesting beginning, or continuation, of friendships.
The team at Martinez agree ‘We’re really looking forward to bringing something dynamic yet refined to Greek Street. A time to be kind to each other and to enjoy sharing this very special space’.
