Historic Luxury at The Old Hall, Ely

Step into a world of history, romance and luxury when you stay at the Old Hall in Ely, a privately-owned Manor house that has you conjuring up images of Mr Darcy sitting in front of the fireplace sipping his tea.

Located just a mile from the historic town of Ely, this renovated Jacobean Manor House is the epitome of luxurious country living. Set in acres of land with three serene lakes, panoramic views as far as the eye can see including Ely Cathedral and bushes carved into elegant swans it is the most idyllic place to escape everyday life and recharge your wellbeing.

The Old Hall has fourteen opulent bedrooms and suites, each one unique and full of character. We were staying in the Steward room, full of manor house charm, with dark wood furniture, duck egg blue and white fabrics, and large windows that overlook the manicured gardens. The temptation to snuggle up on one of the chairs and gaze out over the picturesque landscape nearly won me over, but then a glass of bubbles outside on the patio was calling and the pull was just too great.

Dinner is served in the Orangery, with floor to ceiling windows offering tranquil vistas over the scenic lake and gardens, creating an ambience that has you waiting in anticipation of the delights to follow.

We began our dining experience with King scallops served with a smoked lobster bisque and apple foam, paired with a glass of Ultimate Provence Rose, beautifully presented with an array of textures and tastes that were a real treat to the palette.

The main event was Suffolk lamb rump, lamb fat potato terrine, spring green salad and lamb sauce – the meat was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy with a vibrant mix of colours that were reflected in the rich taste. This was paired perfectly with a glass of Nosotros Pinot Noir Reserva wine.

Dessert was just as appetising, poached rhubarb in crystallised puff pastry served with Chantilly cream, exquisite and flavoursome, the perfect end to a culinary delight.

After dinner, the pull of watching the sunset over Ely Cathedral was just too big and we took our glass of port, lit the firepits and snuggled under blankets on the patio, watching the beautiful summer’s day turn into a starry night sky. It was a wonderful end to an exceptional evening of impeccable food and wine just sitting back and pretending to be Lord and Lady of the Manor, even if it was only for a short while.

The Old Hall is the most perfect place to enjoy some peace and tranquillity and immerse yourself in the luxury of your surroundings – somewhere that you can just escape and savour each moment.
