Fancy swapping your usual hotel room for a little piece of royal history? The Water The Water Tower at Sandringham has been transformed into an extraordinary romantic retreat for two and it’s now available to stay in.
Standing on the private Sandringham Estate for almost 150 years, the striking Victorian tower unfolds across four circular levels. Downstairs you’ll find the kitchen and dining space, followed by a king-size bedroom and a wonderfully cosy treetop living room complete with working fireplace.
The interiors have been carefully designed to complement rather than compete with the building’s history. Heritage-inspired colours, understated furnishings and reclaimed pieces sourced from around the Sandringham Estate sit alongside historic photographs of the Royal Family, while curved walls and changing views are a constant reminder that this is certainly no ordinary holiday cottage.
But save the best until last. Climb the narrow spiral staircase and you’ll emerge inside the Tower’s original 32,000-gallon cast-iron water tank, now an intimate rooftop terrace with a bistro table for two and uninterrupted 360-degree views across the Sandringham Estate and Norfolk countryside.
It’s here that The Water Tower really comes into its own. Imagine morning coffee high above the treetops, watching rare-breed cattle and sheep grazing in the parkland below, or pouring a glass of something chilled as the sun begins to disappear across the Norfolk countryside. With just two guests sharing the entire tower, it feels wonderfully secluded despite its rather prestigious address.
Built in 1877 to improve the water supply to Sandringham House, the tower also incorporated a viewing room where members of the Royal Family and their guests would gather during shooting parties and picnics. More than a century later, guests can look out across many of those same views.
