South American Cruising

Sue Alexander from Eagle Travel shares her experience of sailing on a Silversea Cruise.

Having recently watched national treasure Jane MacDonald on her epic voyage on Silverseas luxurious Silver Muse in South America it bought back fond memories of our own Cruise a few years ago on Silversea’s Silver Whisper.

We flew to Buenos Aires, a City which I knew very little about so decided to have a few nights there to explore. What a rich history this fascinating and vibrant place has. The Paris of South America is alive, and we loved it.

We took a guided city tour with our own English-speaking guide which was invaluable. He showed us the colourful history of the various quarters, each one with its own distinct character. We were fortunate enough to visit San Telmo on Sunday, so the famous antique fair was in full swing, fascinating. One of the iconic sights of this area are the Tango Dancers who set their own impromptu stage on street corners and pavements where they place a CD player on the ground and start dancing! What better way to enjoy an ice-cold beer. In La Boca neighborhood we saw the colourful ‘shacks’ of The Camonito which reflect the areas early immigrant days.

The Casa Rosada synonymous with the reign of the infamous Peron’s is a fascinating stop and I can still recall seeing old news footage of Eva Peron waving from the Balcony. The Evita influence is still evident, it gives the City a very personal edge and a visit to the Recoleta Cemetery to see her grave is surprisingly moving.

We ate at the newly reclaimed and modernised Puerto Moderno at a quayside Restaurant where the steaks were the size of a Sunday Roast, the Red wine was delicious, and the bill was extraordinarily cheap.

Buenos Aires is worth a visit in its own right, it felt safe and had so much to explore, I would go back in a heartbeat. However we only had 3 nights there before boarding our luxury Cruise ship Silver Whisper for a week as we plied our way to Rio de janeiro.

We stopped in several beautiful beachside ports en route including the Uruguayan Capital of Montevideo. Famous for the scuttling of the German Battleship Admiral Graf Spee during WWII, whose anchor can still be seen in the Centre of the Port.  Here we experienced the extraordinary lively Mercado Del Puerto which is an old port Market filled with colourful Steakhouses, Stalls and Churrascaria. Delicious, buzzing and fascinating

One of my abiding memories will forever be the early morning arrival into Rio, we stood on deck in silence as we glided through the most beautiful landscape of peaks and mist before spotting the iconic Sugarloaf and Corcovado Mountains. A City in impossibly beautiful surroundings and world famous for its beaches and Carnival. As part of this cruise we also incorporated a trip to the majestic Iguassu Falls for a few nights to explore both the Brazilian and Argentinian side of the Falls. It is usually quite straight forward to tailor-make an itinerary based around a cruise, particularly when travelling that far you really want to see as much as possible.

Our Cruise on Silver Whisper was impeccable. Silverseas small luxury Ships are designed for those who delight in exploring all four corners of the world but want to do it in comfort and style in the most lavish surroundings imaginable. All accommodations are spacious, Ocean View Suites that include Butler service and most include private Balconies. Silversea Voyages and cruise expeditions sail to over 900 destinations on all seven continents, more than any other cruise line.

When you sail with Silversea just about everything is included in the fare.  Selected wines and premium brand spirits, specialty coffees, juices and soft drinks are complimentary in all bars and lounge and your minibar will be stocked with your preferred beverage. Gratuities are not expected which is a breath of fresh air for those who have had the dilemma of having the deal with an envelope at the end of a cruise with other lines. Complimentary Wi-Fi is also as standard for all guests

Gourmet dining in a selection of specialty restaurants is an elegant affair and one of Silverseas benchmarks. It doesn’t get much better than this. With their open seating policy, you can arrive at leisure and dine with whoever you please.

I have cruised with many Cruise lines over the years and Silversea are most definitely one of the most luxurious and inclusive I have enjoyed.
