Returning to Olympia London from 30 October – 5 November, Spirit of Christmas Fair offers a wealth of festive inspiration. Fair Director, Mary-Claire Boyd, shares her thoughts on the Christmas decorating trends for 2023.
One of the biggest trends we’ll continue to see that will be carried through from how we shop, will be the theme of sustainability. Consumers are keen to focus on high-quality material products and are opting for items that are designed to last, and this is something we’ll see filter through with Christmas décor this year once more.
There is a bigger focus on eco-friendly materials more so than plastic knick-knatincks that can fall out of favour fast. This is also reflected in the rise of DIY and handmade decorations. Whether individuals are opting to create and make their own, or are shopping from independent boutique artisan businesses, such as those you can find at the Spirit of Christmas Fair, knowing you have something that is personal, one-of-a-kind and that is designed to last is always a nice touch when it comes to Christmas.
Of course, the traditional colours of gold, red and green will always be popular during the Christmas season. However, we anticipate we’ll see bold patterns and bright colours offering a rainbow of festiveness throughout homes this year. Coloured ornaments on trees in jewel tones and psychedelic, hypnotic and vibrant colours add a much-needed brightness and warmth to a home on a cold wintry night.
These bright colours also filter through to those who might want to embrace a touch of vintage nostalgia. Glass baubles in an array of colours, antique inspired figurinesof Father Christmas or festive scenesand retro style garlands and lights are also on the rise.
Nature will also have a role when it comes to Christmas décor. Using natural elements like pinecones, dried fruits and wooden accents can create a rustic and cosy feel that is so often sought-after during the winter months.
A lot of what we like at Christmas and with our Christmas decorating is very much down to personal preference and taste. Although the above are themes we’re seeing rise in popularity this year, it’s important to remember to choose the décor and items that you like and will enjoy throughout the Christmas season.
